Lesson we get from German Philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804)…Why die poor?

When a beautiful lady called Christina Ntwale took the picture (attached), at Morogoro Hotel after three days of Human Rights Awareness to Journalist under Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC), I did not think it will happen like this.

Two weeks later when I was repeating to watch pictures of the event; I saw the real pose with real meaning.

I wrote in my facebook account, “You learn from the things that happen in your career. You get up and down. You never give up. All the things that happened in my career, thank God it happened early rather than late in my career.”

After that I slept. When I woke up I took a book of Philosophy. There were a good story of An Intellectual giant, German philosopher Immanuel Kant.

According to the book, Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Ethics, trans. By Thomas Kingsmill Abbott  (London: Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd., 1926). Let me share with you his story.

  • Immanuel Kant stood barely five feet tall as an adult. Born with deformed chest, Kant was plagued with health problems his entire life. Because of his poor health. Kant maintained a strict regimen; his daily walks were so regular that people could set their watches by the times he walked past their houses. After completing his Studies , Kant worked for several years as tutor to the children of Prussian aristocrats. In 1755 he got a job as privatdocent at the University of Konigsberg, making Kant the first of the major philosophers to be professional university teacher. As a privatdocent Kant was licensed to give lectures. He was not paid by the university, however, but the students. Kant lectured as many as twenty-one hours a week on subjects ranging from fireworks and physical geography to metaphysics. As a lecturer he was witty and inspiring. One of his students later wrote that they “never left a single lecturein his ethics without having become better me.” Despite his popularity as a teacher, Kant remained poor for many years. In 1770, after many years of trying to get a permanet teaching position at the university, Kant was fainally appointed professor of Logic and Metaphysics. He remained at the university as a professor until poor health forced him to retire in 1796. In his later years Kant gained fame as a sort of oracle, and Konigsberg became a shrine of philosophy. People came from all over to consult Kant an all sorts of issues including the lawfulness of vaccinations. He died in 1804, having spent his entire life in Konigsberg. Kant’s great work in philosophy, Critique of Pure Reason, was not till 1781, when he was in his late fifties. It was followed in relatively quick succession by other great works, including the Fundamental Principles of The Metaphysics of Morals in 1785. Unlike Utilitarians, Kant was more concerned with establishing a metaphysics foundation for morality than in coming up with an ethics system that could be used for formulating social policy . He believed that only reason could provide this foundation. If moral law is to be morally compelling, he argued, it must be logically consistent as well as absolutely binding. The most fundamental moral principle-Categorical imperative-requires us to do something regardless of the consequences. Kant ‘s concepts of the good will and the categorical imperative continue to be two of the most useful concepts in discussion of moral issues.”

So this is a life story of German philosopher Immanuel Kant who died poor despite intellectual giantism.

I asked myself will I die poor despite good knowledge I have, and hard working spirit? I think we should not die poor no matter what will happen in the near future. The only thing is to Thank God.
Christina Ntwale
